Scholarship Selection Criteria
How applications for Academic, Practitioner and Community scholarships were assessed for the INHSU 2019 conference in Montréal.
Scholarship OverviewHow applications were scored
Three scholarship streams, one panel process
Applications for INHSU 2019 scholarships were reviewed by three independent reviewers. Selection followed the criteria below, with abstract ranking, the applicant’s role, and the value of their attendance to the conference all taken into account. Use these criteria to prepare a complete application before registering.
Academic Scholarships
Academic scholarships were awarded on the strength of the submitted work. Applications were ranked against the abstracts received for the conference, so the scientific merit and originality of the abstract carried the most weight in the assessment.
- Applications based on top-ranked abstracts received priority.
- Reviewers assessed the abstract against the conference programme themes.
- Where rankings were close, the review panel discussed the case before deciding.
Practitioner Scholarships
Practitioner scholarships were evaluated on the applicant’s organisational role and on the importance of the conference to their day-to-day work. Applications were considered on how attendance would support service delivery in hepatitis care for people who use drugs.
- Evidence of the applicant’s role within their organisation.
- How relevant the conference content was to the applicant’s practice.
- Expected value of the applicant sharing their experience with colleagues on return.
Community Scholarships
Community scholarships used criteria defined for applicants living with or affected by hepatitis C and drug use. Reviewers considered lived experience, community advocacy work, and how the applicant would contribute to discussion of hepatitis care in substance users during the meeting.
- Community and peer roles in hepatitis C treatment and support.
- Relevance of the submitted abstract, where one was provided.
- Contribution to peer discussion, advocacy and knowledge exchange.

The INHSU 2019 conference, held in Montréal, welcomed abstracts, oral presentations and poster sessions focused on hepatitis care in substance users, and this page explains how academic, practitioner and community scholarship applications were assessed for the eighth International Conference on Hepatitis Care in Substance Users. Applications were reviewed by three independent reviewers working from a single panel process, using a shared scoring framework for each of the three scholarship streams so that abstract ranking, the applicant's role in the field, and the likely value of their attendance were weighed together before decisions were made.
